Panoramic summit views: Over Lake Natron's pink soda flats, the Rift Valley escarpment, and distant volcanic peaks.
Authentic Maasai country: Your climb is led by experienced local Maasai guides who know the mountain intimately.
A genuine bucket-list challenge: One of the toughest and most unique treks in East Africa.
Stargazing in one of Africa's darkest skies as you begin your ascent.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 — Arusha to Lake Natron

Depart Arusha in the morning and travel north through classic Maasai rangelands, with the Rift Valley walls towering on either side. The scenery shifts from cultivated highlands to dramatic, arid volcanic plains as you approach Lake Natron — a vast, mineral-rich soda lake famous for its flamingo colonies and otherworldly landscapes.

On arrival, check in to your camp or lodge near Engare Sero. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing. Your guide will hold a pre-climb briefing, covering the route, pacing, safety, and what to expect through the night. Enjoy an early dinner and get a few hours of essential rest before the climb.

Optional add-on (time permitting): a short visit to the Lake Natron shoreline or nearby Engare Sero waterfalls.

Overnight
: Camp or lodge near Lake Natron
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 — Midnight Summit Climb & Return to Arusha

Wake around 11:00 PM – midnight for a light snack and final preparations, then begin the ascent under starlight. The climb is steep and continuous from the very start, gaining altitude quickly over loose volcanic ash and rock. Your guide sets a steady, manageable pace with regular rest stops.

The final section to the crater rim is the most demanding — sharp gradients on loose scree that require focus and determination. The reward is immense: standing on the summit of the Mountain of God as the sun rises over the Rift Valley, lighting up Lake Natron and the endless plains below. On clear mornings, take in views toward Kilimanjaro and the surrounding volcanic peaks.

After soaking in the summit and capturing your photos, begin the careful descent — challenging in its own right on the loose terrain — arriving back at the base by mid-to-late morning. Freshen up, enjoy a well-earned meal, and begin the return drive to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening, tired but triumphant.

Meals: Breakfast (post-summit), Lunch

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • Private 4x4 safari vehicle and professional driver-guide

  • Return road transfers: Arusha – Lake Natron – Arusha

  • Mandatory local Maasai mountain guide

  • Camp / lodge accommodation (1 night) near Lake Natron

  • Meals as specified in the itinerary

  • Drinking water during the trek

  • Pre-climb briefing

  • All government and conservation fees related to the climb

WHAT'S EXCLUDED

  • International and domestic flights

  • Tanzania visa and travel insurance

  • Personal trekking gear (boots, headtorch, clothing)

  • Tips for guides and staff

  • Drinks, snacks, and items of a personal nature

  • Optional activities and excursions

  • Anything not listed under "What's Included"

What to Bring — Packing Essentials

- Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots** with good ankle support

- Headtorch / headlamp** (essential) plus spare batteries

- Warm layers for the cold night start and a light jacket

- Lightweight, breathable clothing for the warmer descent

- Trekking poles (highly recommended for the descent)

- Gloves to protect hands on the steep, rocky sections

- Sunhat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen

- Personal water bottle / hydration pack

- Energy snacks (nuts, dried fruit, energy bars)

- Small daypack

- Personal first-aid kit and any personal medication

Fitness & Preparation

Ol Donyo Lengai is physically demanding and best suited to trekkers in good health and reasonable fitness. The ascent is steep and sustained, often on loose, slippery scree, with the summit gained in a single overnight push. No technical climbing skills are required, but a solid level of cardiovascular fitness, mental determination, and prior hiking experience will make the experience far more enjoyable.

We recommend preparing with regular cardio and some hill or stair training in the weeks before your trek.

Good to Know

- The climb is timed at night for cooler temperatures and a sunrise summit — the volcanic surface becomes extremely hot under the midday sun.

- As an active volcano, summit access and routes can occasionally change subject to volcanic activity and local conditions. Your safety always comes first, and itineraries may be adjusted accordingly.

- This trek pairs perfectly with a Lake Natron stay, a northern Tanzania safari, or a Kilimanjaro climb — ask us about combining it into a longer adventure.
